Love is not always enough.
And hearing that can be painful, especially when you genuinely love someone.
You can love someone deeply and still struggle to have a healthy relationship with them.
Because love is a feeling, but a healthy relationship also requires communication, respect, trust, emotional safety, honesty, accountability, and effort.
You can love someone and still hurt them.
You can love someone and still fail to communicate.
You can love someone and still be emotionally unavailable.
You can love someone and still refuse to take responsibility when you make mistakes.
And sometimes, two people can genuinely love each other but continue hurting each other because they don't know how to communicate, resolve conflict, set boundaries, or understand each other's emotional needs.
That's why saying “but I love you” doesn't automatically fix everything.
Love needs actions.
It needs consistency.
It needs the willingness to listen when your partner tells you that something is hurting them.
It means being able to say, “I was wrong,” instead of always trying to prove that you're right.
It means learning how to disagree without destroying each other.
It means respecting boundaries even when you don't completely understand them.
It means choosing to work on yourself instead of expecting your partner to carry the entire relationship.
And sometimes, love also means recognizing when a relationship has become unhealthy and accepting that loving someone doesn't mean you must tolerate everything they do.
You can love someone and still need boundaries.
You can love someone and still decide that the relationship isn't healthy for you.
You can love someone and still choose yourself.
So if you're asking, “Do they love me?”, that's important.
But also ask:
“Do we know how to love each other in a healthy way?”
Because love can bring two people together.
But healthy love requires both people to keep showing up, communicating, growing, and taking responsibility.
Love matters. But how you treat each other matters too. ❤️
