Trauma doesn't always look like crying.
Sometimes trauma looks like being the person who is always saying, “I'm fine.”
Sometimes it looks like becoming extremely independent because you learned that depending on people wasn't safe.
Sometimes it looks like struggling to trust people, even when they've given you no reason not to.
Sometimes it looks like constantly expecting something bad to happen.
Sometimes it looks like avoiding certain places, conversations, relationships, or situations because they remind you of something painful.
And sometimes trauma looks like anger.
You may find yourself reacting very strongly to situations that seem small to other people not because you're intentionally overreacting, but because something about that situation may remind your nervous system of an earlier experience.
Trauma can also show up as emotional numbness.
You stop crying.
You stop talking.
You stop expecting much from people.
You tell yourself, “I don't care anymore.”
But sometimes not caring is actually a way of protecting yourself from being hurt again.
One of the difficult things about trauma is that you may know intellectually that you're safe now, while part of you still reacts as though the danger is happening again.
That's why simply telling yourself “just move on” doesn't always work.
Healing isn't about pretending the experience never happened.
It's about processing what happened, understanding how it affected you, developing healthier ways of responding, and gradually rebuilding your sense of safety.
And healing doesn't always happen quickly.
Some wounds are invisible.
So if you notice certain patterns in yourself that you don't fully understand, try not to immediately judge yourself.
Instead, ask:
“What happened to me that might have taught me to respond this way?”
Understanding yourself isn't an excuse for harmful behaviour.
It's the beginning of taking responsibility for your healing.
And if something from your past is still affecting your relationships, emotions, trust, sleep, or everyday life, you don't have to work through it alone.
You deserve a safe space to understand what happened and how you can move forward. ❤️
